The Sapporo bid for the 2030 Olympics has now been put on hold, but half a century ago, the city hosted the 1972 Games. The build up to the Games was notable for the first stirrings of environmental awareness as revealed by Soya Ishikuza a researcher at the Sport Sciences Laboratory, Japan Sport Association (JSPO).
